From Crate to Craft
Every item at Crate Expectations is the result of thoughtful design, precise craftsmanship, and a respect for the materials I work with. This isn’t mass production; it’s a labor of love, ensuring that each piece carries the warmth of handwork and the charm of its origins. If you spot a knot or a nail hole, that’s not a flaw—it’s a story.
The process begins with a hunt for discarded wine crates—each one with its own history preserved in wood. I select crates for their character and sturdiness, then carefully determine the work needed to preserve as much of their original charm as possible.
Once I place a crate on my workbench, the real transformation begins:
-
Filling & Repairing: All nails and staples are removed, nail holes and gaps filled, and all major imperfections repaired to ensure each surface is smooth and structurally sound.
-
Sanding: Every board is sanded extensively to bring out the grain and prepare it for finishing.
-
If the final product is to be a bluebird nesting box, the crate is carefully disassembled and boards cut to size; then all sides, roof and floor are fastened together with exterior weather-resistant glue and nails.
-
Staining: Rich stains are then applied that enhance the wood’s natural beauty while honoring its rustic origins.
-
Preserving: Each serving tray, charcuterie board and storage box is sealed with a food-safe finish for a durable, satin-smooth protection that’s built to last. All bluebird nesting boxes receive three coats of a weather-resistant finish to give the piece protection against our New England weather. To keep your bluebird house in good shape for many years to come, take it down at the start of the winter season to prevent ice and snow from accumulating on it.
From crate to creation, I take pride in making items that are not only sustainable but also crafted to last. When you bring one of these pieces into your home, you’re welcoming a slice of craftsmanship that’s been made with hours of care, patience, and a little bit of wine-country soul.
